The Petchenik/Sandberg connection
Arthur Sandberg and Harry Samuels
have always been in agreement that they are related,
though it appears that the connection is on their mothers’ sides, not
directly in the Samuels family tree. Rebecca Garfinkle’s
death certificate (see at right) lists her mother as “Ida Pichenik”;
David Sandberg’s death certificate (posted at right) lists his mother’s name
as “Alice Pochenik”; Eva Grossman’s birth record
(posted at right) lists her parents as Benjamin Grossman and “Alice Pecheniky”; and Alice Petchenik/Sandberg/Grossman’s
death certificate (at right) lists her parents as Abraham Joseph Petchenik and Bessie Petchenik.
Since that document seems the most complete and authoritative (and is the
only document to list the parents of Ida and Alice), I’m adopting that
spelling of the name for references in the family tree. Thus
assuming that Ida and Alice were sisters, then the relations are as listed
below. In other words, David Sandberg is a first cousin to Breindel
Garfinkel, Pearl Garfinkle, Morris Samuels, Samuel Samuels, William Samuels,
and Leah Frumerman; and Arthur Sandberg is a second
cousin to Harry Samuels and Bernard Samuels (my father).
